What is MCT?

MCT is an abbreviation for medium-chain triglycerides, which are shorter chains of fatty acids within the fatty acid group glycerol. These shorter chains (8 to 10 carbon molecules) allow MCT to be absorbed into the stomach and then converted into energy in the liver. Unlike other nutrients, MCT consumes no energy when it is absorbed and converted in the body. Thanks to this, MCT has long been a first choice in healthcare in the treatment of malnourished people with nutrient uptake difficulties. MCT provides about 10% less energy than long chains of fatty acids - about 8.3 kcal compared to about 8.8 to 9 kcal. MCT has also been used as a dietary supplement for the past 15 years, mainly by bodybuilders under diet or by athletes in endurance sports.
